Prospective students ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity which programs to consider, what schools cost, and whether a campus is worth visiting. Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring your content so AI assistants cite your institution instead of summarizing you from third-party sources. It overlaps with SEO but rewards different things: direct answers, clean structure, machine-readable schema, and verifiable facts.

How AI assistants pick their sources

  • Answer density: pages that state the answer plainly in the first paragraph get quoted; pages that bury it in brand language get skipped.
  • Structure: question-form headings, lists, and tables are easy to extract and attribute.
  • Schema: FAQPage, Organization, and Service markup tells engines exactly what a page asserts.
  • Authority and consistency: consistent entity data about your institution across your site and the wider web.
  • Crawlability: engines cite what they can read. Decide your AI crawler policy deliberately.

Eight AEO moves for a university website

  • 1. Lead with the answer. Cost, deadlines, requirements, and outcomes in the first screen of every program page.
  • 2. Add real FAQs with FAQPage schema. Page-specific questions students actually ask, marked up so engines can lift them.
  • 3. Publish an llms.txt file. A plain-text guide that tells AI crawlers what your institution is and which pages answer what.
  • 4. Write question-form headings. Match how people ask: “How much does the MBA cost?” outperforms “Investment”.
  • 5. Keep entity data consistent. Name, locations, accreditation, and key facts identical everywhere they appear.
  • 6. Publish the comparison and cost content you avoid. Engines answer “is X worth it” questions with or without you; participate with verifiable facts.
  • 7. Set a deliberate crawler policy. Blocking AI crawlers does not remove you from answers; it removes your voice from them.
  • 8. Keep content fresh and dated. Engines discount stale pages. Visible update dates and current-year facts earn citations.
